You’ve probably tried them — those sleep hypnosis videos and apps, the soothing voice promising to send you off in twenty minutes. Sometimes they help a bit. Often you’re still lying there afterwards, now slightly annoyed as well as awake. 🧠
So do they actually work? I’m a clinical hypnotherapist, so you might expect me to say “yes, absolutely.” But I’d rather be honest with you, because the real answer is more useful than a sales pitch.
What sleep hypnosis videos can do
Those recordings aren’t nonsense. A calm voice, slow pacing, and guided relaxation genuinely can help lower your arousal level and ease you toward sleep on a given night. They work a bit like a bedtime wind-down: they lower the volume, soothe the nervous system, and for some people, that’s enough to drift off.
If they help you, keep using them — there’s no harm in a tool that settles you. ✨
What they can’t do
Here’s the honest limit: a generic recording soothes the symptom on the night. It doesn’t touch the cause underneath.
If your sleep is broken because your stress bucket is overflowing and your brain is stuck in survival mode, which is true for most people with real insomnia, then a relaxing video is emptying a teaspoon from a bucket that’s refilling all day. It might get you off to sleep tonight, but it won’t stop your brain waking you at 2am tomorrow, because the reason it’s doing that hasn’t changed. 🧘
That’s why the effect so often feels hit-and-miss. You’re treating the overflow, not the tap.
What actually fixes broken sleep
The difference with therapeutic hypnotherapy isn’t the hypnosis itself — it’s what we do with it. Solution-focused work uses hypnosis as one tool inside a bigger process that:
- Empties the stress bucket, addressing what’s actually keeping your brain in survival mode
- Retrains the anxious, alert brain, so it feels safe enough to switch off, night after night
- Builds you tools you keep, including personalised recordings, but also the daily habits that keep the bucket low
In other words: a sleep video is a plaster. Therapeutic hypnotherapy treats the wound. Both have their place, but only one changes the pattern for good.
One thing to try before your coffee goes cold ☕️
If you like sleep recordings, use them — but pair them with one bucket-emptying habit during the day, when it actually counts. A brisk walk, ten minutes outside, or naming your daily 3Ps at bedtime.
You’re not just trying to fall asleep tonight; you’re lowering the overall threat level so your brain stops sabotaging sleep in the first place.
If your sleep needs more than a video
That’s exactly what I do. I help women fix the cause of broken sleep, not just soothe it night by night, in person in East London or online across the UK.
Here when you’re ready. 🫶🏼
