Somewhere between the positive test and the due date, the fear crept in. The horror stories other people can’t wait to share. The what-ifs about the birth itself. The quiet worry that you won’t cope, or won’t be a “good enough” mother before you’ve even begun. π§
Hi, I’m Jodie π©πΌβπ¦±, a clinical hypnotherapist in East London, and the Calm Birth Programme is my hypnobirthing programme for expectant mothers who want to swap that fear for genuine calm and confidence. It’s a drug-free, evidence-informed way to prepare your mind for birth, so you can stay present, stay calm, and step into motherhood as your best self.

Hypnobirthing has nothing to do with being “put under” or being out of control. It’s a set of relaxation, breathing, and mindset techniques that calm your nervous system so your body can do what it’s designed to do.
Here’s the science: when you’re afraid, your primitive brain floods your body with adrenaline and cortisol, the fight-or-flight response. That tension actually works against labour, making it feel more painful and more frightening. When you’re calm, your body produces oxytocin and endorphins instead, the hormones that help labour progress and ease discomfort. β¨
Hypnobirthing simply trains your brain to stay in that calm state, even in a moment that your primitive mind wants to treat as an emergency.
Your brain can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality. So every frightening birth story you’ve absorbed, every dramatic TV labour, every worst-case scenario you’ve imagined at 2am, your primitive brain has filed all of it as real evidence that birth is dangerous.
No wonder the fear feels so big. But it also means the fear isn’t the truth. It’s just what your brain has been trained on. And that can be retrained.
For some women this is general birth anxiety; for others it’s tokophobia, an intense fear of pregnancy or childbirth that can feel overwhelming. Wherever you are on that spectrum, you’re not being dramatic, and you’re not alone. This is exactly the work I do.
One mum I worked with stayed calm throughout labour, kept her heart rate nice and low, and welcomed a beautiful, healthy baby boy. That’s what preparation looks like.

I’m Jodie Clayton (HPD, DSFH, MNCH, AfSFH), a female clinical hypnotherapist in Leyton, East London. I combine psychotherapy, neuroscience, and hypnosis, and I’ve spent years helping women get anxiety out of the driving seat. Preparing for birth calm and confident, rather than fearful, is one of the most rewarding things I do. ππΌ

Yes. Hypnobirthing is simply relaxation, breathing, and mindset work. There’s nothing done to you, and it works alongside whatever birth plan and medical care you choose. It’s a drug-free way to prepare your mind.
Not at all. Hypnobirthing isn’t about “going natural” or refusing help. It’s about staying calm and in control, whatever your birth looks like on the day. Many women find they need less pain relief, but there’s no pressure either way.
Yes. This is exactly the kind of work solution-focused hypnotherapy is brilliant for. We’ll gently retrain the fear response so birth stops feeling like something to dread.
There’s no wrong time, but starting earlier gives your brain more time to practise and lets you enjoy a calmer pregnancy too. We’ll find the right plan for your timeline.
Absolutely. Zoom sessions are just as effective, and many mums-to-be across the UK prefer the convenience.
