You’ve read the articles. You know the breathing exercises. You can explain your own anxiety better than most therapists could. You are, frankly, an expert on your own overthinking.

And yet here you are. Still overthinking. 🧠

If self-awareness cured anxiety, you’d have been cured years ago. So why doesn’t all that knowing actually change anything? There’s a real, specific reason, and it isn’t that you’re not trying hard enough.

Knowing and feeling live in different parts of your brain

Your rational, logical understanding lives in your intellectual mind, the newest, cleverest part of your brain. It’s where you know the plane is safe, the text back will come, the worst-case scenario almost never happens.

But anxiety doesn’t live there. Anxiety lives in your primitive mind, the ancient, survival-driven part that’s been keeping humans alive for millions of years. And when your primitive mind is running the show, it doesn’t take calls from the intellectual mind. It’s too busy scanning for lions.

So you end up in the strange, exhausting situation of knowing you’re safe and feeling like you’re in danger at the same time. The knowing is real. It’s just not in charge. ✨

The bucket is the reason you’re stuck in the primitive mind

Think of everything you carry as pouring into a stress bucket, the deadlines, the broken sleep, the difficult conversation, the low-level hum of just… everything. Small things count. The bucket doesn’t care whether a stress was “big enough to matter.”

When that bucket is full, your brain defaults to the primitive mind, because a full bucket reads as “life is dangerous right now.” And the primitive mind is where overthinking, worst-casing and looping all live. You’re not overthinking because you’re weak-willed. You’re overthinking because your brain is stuck in the mode that overthinks. 🧘

Which means the answer was never “think better thoughts.” It’s “empty the bucket, so your brain can hand control back to the part of you that thinks clearly.”

This is exactly why hypnotherapy works when logic doesn’t

Talking about anxiety engages the intellectual mind, helpful, but it’s talking to the part that isn’t the problem. Solution-focused hypnotherapy works differently: it calms the primitive mind directly, lowers the cortisol, and empties the bucket. From there, your intellectual mind naturally comes back online, and the overthinking loosens its grip on its own.

That’s the shift my clients describe as their brain feeling “quieter,” or “clearer,” or “less tangled.” They didn’t force better thoughts. Their brain just stopped being stuck in the mode that manufactures anxious ones.

One thing to try before your coffee goes cold ☕️

Next time you catch yourself spiralling, don’t argue with the thought — you’ll lose, because you’re arguing with a brain that isn’t listening. Instead, do something physical that empties a little from the bucket: a brisk five-minute walk, ten slow breaths out longer than in, or naming five things you can see in the room.

You’re not trying to think your way calm. You’re giving your nervous system a signal that there’s no lion, and that’s a language the primitive mind actually understands.

You don’t have to keep fighting your own brain

If you’ve spent years trying to logic your way out and wondering why it never sticks, this is why. And it’s fixable. I help women empty the bucket and get back in control of their own minds, in person in East London or online across the UK.

Here when you’re ready. 🫶🏼
