The Approach

What is solution-focused hypnotherapy?

If you’ve tried therapy before and found yourself going over the same old ground, retelling your story, revisiting the past, understanding why you feel the way you do but never quite feeling different, this is going to sound like a relief. 🧠

Solution-focused hypnotherapy takes the opposite approach. It’s less interested in where you’ve been and far more interested in where you’re going. It combines neuroscience, psychotherapy, and hypnosis to help you move forward, calmly, practically, and often surprisingly quickly.

The Short Answer

A clear definition

Solution-focused hypnotherapy is a modern, evidence-informed approach that blends talking therapy with relaxation and hypnosis to reduce anxiety and stress, and to help you build the life you want, by focusing on solutions and the future, rather than analysing the past.

Two words do the heavy lifting:

The Science Bit πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

The science it’s built on

Solution-focused hypnotherapy works with how your brain actually functions. A few core ideas explain the whole approach:

  • Your two minds. You have an intellectual mind, rational and calm, and a primitive mind, an ancient survival system. When life gets overwhelming, the primitive mind takes over, and that’s where anxiety, overthinking and low mood live.
  • The stress bucket. Picture everything you carry pouring into a bucket. When it overflows, your brain tips into survival mode. Empty the bucket, and your brain hands control back to the calm, rational part of you.
  • Your brain can’t tell imagination from reality. Which means deliberately rehearsing calm, positive patterns can convince it you’re safe. That’s a lot of what hypnosis is doing. ✨
  • Neuroplasticity. Your brain changes based on what you repeat. Show it a new, calmer path often enough and it becomes the default. You are not stuck with the brain you have today.

What To Expect

What actually happens in a session

1

We talk β€” but forward, not back.

Rather than dwelling on problems, we focus on what’s going well, what you want more of, and the next small step. It’s constructive and often genuinely uplifting.

2

You learn how your brain works.

Understanding the mechanism takes the fear out of it. Anxiety stops feeling like a mystery and starts feeling like something you can influence.

3

Then, hypnosis.

The session ends with hypnosis β€” a deeply relaxed state, much like the drifty feeling just before sleep. This is where your brain consolidates the positive focus from the session. You’re aware and in control the whole time. 🧘

Over time, you build a “mental first aid kit” β€” tools you keep for life, so the goal is never for you to need therapy forever.

How It’s Different

How it compares to other therapies

Solution-focused hypnotherapy Traditional talking therapy
FocusThe future and solutionsThe past and root causes
FeelForward-moving, often upliftingCan involve reliving difficult events
LengthDesigned to be relatively briefOften open-ended
The pastContext, not the workFrequently the main focus

This is why it so often works for people who’ve tried other things and felt “too complex to fix.” It’s not that other therapies are wrong β€” many help enormously. It’s that solution-focused hypnotherapy works on the brain and the pattern, not just the narrative.

Being sceptical is completely fine β€” most of my clients were (I was too). You don’t have to believe it will work. You just have to be willing to try.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is solution-focused hypnotherapy evidence-based?

It draws on well-established neuroscience and psychotherapy principles, and a growing body of research supports hypnotherapy for anxiety, stress and related issues. It’s a recognised modality practised by qualified, registered therapists.

Will I be unconscious or out of control during hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is simply a state of deep relaxation, like the moment just before you fall asleep. You’re aware throughout and can’t be made to do anything you don’t want to.

How many sessions will I need?

It’s designed to be relatively brief compared to open-ended therapy, because the focus is on moving forward. The exact number depends on you and what you’re working on.

Do I have to talk about my past?

Only as much as is useful for context. The work itself is focused on the present and future, not on analysing or reliving what’s happened.

Does it work online?

Yes β€” sessions over Zoom are just as effective as in person.
